A '''sub dungeon''' is a type of [[MCD:Location|location]] {{in|Dungeons}} accessed exclusively through [[MCD:Door|doors]] within larger locations. They are found within [[MCD:Mission|missions]], [[MCD:Secret Mission|secret missions]], [[MCD:Sub-mission|sub-missions]], and [[MCD:Camp|Camp]]. Certain sub dungeons are required, and always spawn 100% of the time. Other sub dungeons are optional, and have varying spawn chances.

Required and optional sub dungeons can both contain [[MCD:Chest|chests]], [[MCD:Raid Captain|raid captains]], and other challenges. Optional sub dungeons specifically can also contain [[MCD:Eye of Ender|eyes of ender]], [[MCD:Ancient|ancient]] [[MCD:Mob|mobs]], higher level reward chests such as [[MCD:Chest#Fancy Chest|fancy]] or [[MCD:Chest#Obsidian Chest|obsidian]] chests, and [[MCD:Scroll|scrolls]] to unlock secret missions.

Most optional sub dungeons do not spawn 100% of the time in their designated locations. Players must repeatedly reset a location until they get a layout with a desired optional sub dungeon. The number of [[MCD:Secrets|secrets]] in a mission, shown on the bottom left corner of the mission map accessed by pressing the “M” key, can be useful for determining if a given mission layout contains an optional sub dungeon.
