A pickaxe is a tool that is required to mine most types of stone, ore, and blocks crafted from stone or ore. Unlike other tools, the tier of a pickaxe determines which blocks it can mine successfully.
Variants
There are six pickaxe variants:
* Wooden Pickaxe
* Stone Pickaxe
* Iron Pickaxe
* Golden Pickaxe
* Diamond Pickaxe
* Netherite Pickaxe
Obtaining
Crafting
Wooden, stone, iron, golden, and diamond pickaxes are crafted using 2 sticks and 3 identical units of tool material.

Usage
Mining
A pickaxe is used to break stone-based and metal-based materials faster. Different qualities of pickaxe are required to successfully harvest certain ores and blocks. For example, while stone can be mined with any pickaxe, gold ore must be mined with an iron pickaxe, diamond pickaxe, or netherite pickaxe, or else the player harvests no item.
Durability
Each tier of pickaxe has a different Durability, or number of uses, based on the type. Breaking a block with a pickaxe consumes one durability point. No durability is consumed for blocks that break instantly, like torches and flowers.
The following table shows the number of uses per pickaxe type:

Speed
Different pickaxes also mine many materials at different speeds. The following table shows the number of seconds required to break each type of block:
* A red background indicates that the block cannot be harvested with that type of pickaxe.
* A yellow background indicates that the block cannot be harvested with that type of pickaxe, but still drops something.
* A green background indicates that the block can be harvested with that type of pickaxe.

Weapon
A pickaxe loses 2 points of durability when used as a weapon. Pickaxes may be used as a weapon, and java, they have an attack speed higher than that of an axe, shovel, or trident, but lower than that of a sword or mace.
Java Edition
Pickaxes have an attack speed of 1.2 and take 0.85 seconds to recover.
