== Spawning ==

Blazes may spawn naturally in [[Nether Fortress|nether fortresses]] in groups of 2 or 3 at a [[light level]] of 11 or less. Blazes may also spawn from [[monster spawner]]s in nether fortresses. The spawners are located on small platforms with a three-block staircase leading up to it.

=== Breaking ===

Creaking hearts drop as an item only when mined by a tool enchanted with [[Silk Touch]]. Otherwise, they drop 1-3 [[resin clump]]s; [[Fortune]] can increase the maximum drops by 1 per level (up to 6 with Fortune 3).
Destroying a naturally-generated creaking heart also drops 20-24 [[experience]].

The '''Arch-Illager''', also known by his birth name '''[[MCD:The Rise of the Arch-Illager|Archie]]''', is one of the two main antagonists (alongside [[Heart of Ender]]) of ''[[Minecraft Dungeons]]''. He is the founder and leader of the [[MCD:Illager|illager]] empire in the game, and is a proxy for the [[MCD:Orb of Dominance|Orb of Dominance]] to carry out its goals.
In the opening cinematic, Archie has ragged and torn clothes and is holding a torch. When he is crowned as the arch-illager, he has blue robes that are similar to the [[MCD:Evocation Robe|evocation robe]], a large necklace with a ruby on it and a crown with a sapphire and a ruby on it. He also carries a staff to hold the Orb of Dominance. The Arch-Illager is also the only Illager to have a horizontal head and a smaller height.
In [[MCD:Arcade|the arcade edition]], the top of the Arch-Illager's crown lacks a texture, only appearing black.
== Lore ==
{{SpoilerWarning|section|''[[Minecraft Dungeons]]''}}Before the events of the game, Archie was an exile from his [[MCD:Illager|illager]] tribe, repeatedly searching for a village to call home, only for the [[MCD:Villager|villagers]] to reject him, after getting in a scuffle with five heroes. He was seen being driven out of a village on the {{MCD|Squid Coast}} in the opening cutscene of the game.
Eventually, after a long time of searching, Archie stumbled upon a mountain cave containing the [[MCD:Orb of Dominance|Orb of Dominance]]. The Orb made promises to give Archie anything he could ever want. It repeatedly told Archie that it was his destiny to rule the world. Although he denied this, Archie would go on to unite all of the illager tribes under one banner, taking the title of Arch-Illager in the process. He then used his army of illagers to raid the villages that shunned him, taking the villagers as slaves.
The hero(s) would then make it their mission to stop the Arch-Illager.
During his reign, he would collaborate with the evil [[MCD:Witch|witches]] of the [[MCD:Soggy Swamp|Soggy Swamp]] to obtain large potion supplies as well as the {{MCD|Nameless One}} of the {{MCD|Desert Temple}} to obtain the [[MCD:Undead|undead army]]. He would also order the development of the [[MCD:Redstone Mines|redstone mines]] to use his villager slaves to mine [[redstone]], and construct the [[MCD:Fiery Forge|fiery forge]] to refine the gathered redstone into [[MCD:Redstone Golem|redstone golems]] and the [[MCD:Redstone Monstrosity|Redstone Monstrosity]] to enforce his rule. Eventually, the Arch-Illager would also attempt to betray the Nameless One, launching a raid on the desert temple to try and take the [[MCD:Nameless One|Nameless One’s]] staff to gain the ability to summon the undead army for himself. Each of these plans, however, would be foiled by the heroes.
Additionally, the Arch-Illager repeatedly appears in the game to summon Illagers to attack the heroes, which occurs less often as the game progresses.
Eventually, once the heroes reach the Arch-Illager's throne room in {{MCD|Highblock Halls}}, he summons one last attack as the heroes reach him, before retreating to the {{MCD|Obsidian Pinnacle}}.
After the heroes finally reach him on the highest point of his castle, the Arch-Illager fights the hero(s) himself. After having been heavily wounded, Archie is sucked toward the Orb of Dominance, which proceeds to manifest itself as the {{MCD|Heart of Ender}}. Once enough damage has been done to the embodiment, the heart of ender dissipates, rendering the Orb of Dominance extremely unstable.
Finally, the heroes find the Arch-Illager struggling to contain the Orb of Dominance, a few moments before it shatters, knocking Archie down and relieving him of its control. Without the Orb of Dominance to give him power, Archie becomes afraid of the approaching heroes. However, they unexpectedly offer kindness and help him up. Archie then celebrates the destruction of the Orb of Dominance, and by extension the persona of the Arch-Illager, with the heroes. However, the Orb of Dominance wasn't fully destroyed. Its Shards of Dominance caused problems like the events of {{MCD|Jungle Awakens}}, {{MCD|Creeping Winter}}, {{MCD|Howling Peaks}}, and {{MCD|Hidden Depths}}, eventually leading to some [[MCD:Enderman|endermen]] finding the reformed remains in a cave, bringing it to [[MCD:The Stronghold|a stronghold]] and entering a mysterious portal. Later the heroes must fight against the {{MCD|Vengeful Heart of Ender}}. A shard is not in the {{MCD|Flames of the Nether}} DLC however. After the {{MCD|Vengeful Heart of Ender}} and the {{MCD|Orb of Dominance}} was destroyed, it's currently unknown what happened to the Arch-Illager afterwards.

== Behavior ==
The Arch-Illager has seven behaviors. If a hero or summon comes too close to him, he begins repeatedly teleporting around the arena and firing blasts after each teleport. His health pool is the second lowest of any boss in the game, although this is mitigated by the deadly [[MCD:Heart of Ender|Heart of Ender]] battle that takes place after his health is depleted. Additionally, the Arch-Illager, when he isn't a boss, flies around summoning bosses and battles to try and thwart the hero's efforts to stop him.
;Basic attack
The Arch-Illager fires three purple energy blasts in a horizontal swath toward a random hero or summon. Deals a small amount of damage if it hits (sixteen damage per energy blast on Default). Used extremely often.
;Teleport
When a hero comes within close range of the Arch-Illager, usually melee attack range, and the hero gets hit by one if his energy blasts, the Arch-Illager teleports four or five times{{verify}} in a random area around the hero to avoid taking much damage. Similarly to the [[MCD:Enderman|enderman]], the arch-illager can also hide in teleportation and not reappear instantly. The teleport sound is identical to that of the [[MCD:Illusioner|illusioner]] miniboss that is found in the [[MCD:Creeping Winter|Creeping Winter]] DLC when doing a mirror move.
;Enhance
The Arch-Illager can enchant hostile mobs in the same way that the [[MCD:Enchanter|enchanter]] does. However, if the Arch-Illager teleports, the enchanting is broken off the mob.
;Defeated in a whirlwind
Once the Arch-Illager has taken enough damage, his staff slips out of his hands, sucks him in, and absorbs him while transforming into the [[MCD:Heart of Ender|heart of ender]].
;Summon circle
Since the Arch-Illager is not much of a warrior, he is capable of summoning a group of Illagers to assist him, usually a circle of ten to twenty [[MCD:Vindicator|vindicators]] around the hero.
;Summon line
The Arch-Illager can also summon a line of twenty [[MCD:Pillager|pillagers]] through the center of the arena.
;Summon single
The Arch-Illager rarely summons a single {{MCD|redstone golem}}. This mob is not {{MCD|powerful}} unlike other {{MCD|redstone golem}}s, and unlike the Arch-Illager's other summoned mobs, it does not despawn once he is defeated. While this attack is used sparingly, it is his most powerful attack.
== Biography ==
The arch-illager’s origin story is described in the canonical novel ''[[MCD:The Rise of the Arch-Illager|The Rise of the Arch-Illager]]''.
=== Early life ===
[[File:Woodland Mansion MCD.png|thumb|128px|A {{MCD|Woodland Mansion}}.]]
The '''Arch-Illager''', originally known as '''Archie''', was born within a [[MCD:Woodland Mansion|woodland mansion]] under the leadership of [[MCD:Walda|Walda]], an evoker. His parents died in a [[patrol]] when he was young, leaving him orphaned at a young age. Forced to grow up alone, Archie had a rough childhood, hardly having any help from his illager tribe and being the target of harassment from [[MCD:Thord|Thord]], an evoker. Sometime early in his life, he developed ideas that if the illager tribes of the overworld banded together, they could defeat the heroes that constantly hunted them. Due to being an outsider, the other illagers disregarded his radical beliefs as they went against the common ideology that illagers are power hungry and combative by nature, and that they only follow the strongest illager as their leader. The other illagers believed that if they ever tried to unite, it would just be coup after coup.
=== Life in exile ===
[[File:Karl the Smacker.jpg|thumb|128px|Karl ("Smacker") is one of the five heroes in story.]]
Archie’s life takes a turn when, Archie was forcibly brought into the patrol led by the [[raid captain]] Thord, patrol is responsible for clearing the nearby monsters, a hero named '''Karl''', known as '''"Smacker"''', completely obliterates undeads and Archie's fellow illagers, except for him and Thord, he blamed the incident on Archie for not helping, even though he was told to stay out of the fight. After they returned to the woodland mansion, Thord reported to [[MCD:Walda|Walda]] of his view of the incident. Thord’s lies trigger Archie to react by push Thord in front of Walda. Thord fell on purpose and pretended to be in pain. Because of Archie's actions, She banished Archie from the tribe forever.
[[File:Archie new home.jpg|thumb|128px|Archie searches for a new home.]]
Eventually he arrives at a nearby village on the [[MCD:Squid Coast|squid coast]]. They are distrustful of him, but he is able to convince a [[MCD:villager|villager]] named [[MCD:Yumi|Yumi]] to take him in after he proves his credibility. He lived in the village for anywhere from a month to a year before "Smacker" returned. The village spokesperson, [[MCD:Salah|Salah]], got the hero’s attention drawn to Archie. "Smacker" threatened to kill Archie, since he could never feel safe in a village if an illager was there, no matter how small. Yumi wanted him to stay, but she had no choice but to tell Archie to run so "Smacker" couldn't find him.
[[File:IllagerDrawnToOrb.png|thumb|128px|Archie finds the Orb of Dominance.]]
After a long time of searching, he found the [[MCD:Orb of Dominance|Orb of Dominance]], promising to give Archie anything he could ever want. It repeatedly told him it was Archie's destiny to rule the world, although he denied this. Archie would unite many illager tribes under his rule, taking the title in the process.
=== Illager empire ===
The orb constructed Highblock Keep as Archie’s home, and gave him six [[MCD:Redstone Golem|redstone golems]] to protect him. However, these golems could not last forever, so he'd need a forge to make more, and a mine to gather [[redstone]], and he'd need workers to do it. The illagers were willing to work for him; at least once the orb proved that it would not allow anyone to take it from Archie. The orb insisted they would need to attack the villages of the continent so the militant illagers would not get bored.
=== Revenge ===
[[File:Walda the Evoker And Arch-Illager.jpg|thumb|128px|Walda crowns Archie as the Arch-Illager.]]
[[File:IllagerSquidCoastRaid.png|thumb|128px|The Arch-Illager takes his revenge.]]
[[File:Karl afraid Redstone Monstrosity.gif|thumb|128px|"Smacker" was scared away by Archie's custom-made [[MCD:Redstone Monstrosity|redstone monstrosity]].]]
It was a downward spiral, as one thing required another, each more evil than the last. He eventually defeated Thord, who attempted to betray him, at that night, in the throne room, Archie’s coronation with the illagers bowing at him out of respect. Archie then decides to call himself the Arch-Illager. And then he captures Salah as a prisoner, and tried to convince Yumi, his only friend, to join him, she refused. Yumi almost got him to quit the entire thing and just go back to living in the village, but the Orb, now partially controlling Archie's thoughts, would not let him. With the new title of the Arch-Illager, Archie, under the influence of the orb, vowed to make all of the Overworld suffer for taking away the peaceful life he could have had...
=== Personality ===
As being an illager. Archie seems to have been quite cowardly before he was corrupted by the Orb of Dominance. He often would not run into the face of danger. However, in certain situations, he has the potential to be a strong warrior. He also is shown to have violent tendencies in certain situations, such as when Thord causes him to get exiled, and when Salah causes Smacker to get him thrown out of the village. At one point, he briefly considers executing Walda for her part in Thord’s betrayal. These violent acts are also related to illager's nature.

{{Quote|'''THE ARCH-ILLAGER''' – Once you have fought your way through the hordes of Illagers, you will reach the top of the Obsidian Pinnacle and come face-to-face with the Arch-Illager. What he lacks in height, he makes up for in evil. Since he is not much of a warrior, he will call forth his darkest creation to do his bidding.|''Guide to Minecraft Dungeons:<br>A Handbook for Heroes''}}{{Quote|He became the Arch-Illager when he obtained the power of the Orb of Dominance. But before that, he was a misfit Illager who couldn't fit in a normal Illager society, and found this power within a mountain.|Chris Nordgren}}{{Quote|A recent crime spree has begun in several villages across the nation. The crimes, which include pillaging, arson, and monstrosity unleashing, have been attributed to a local illager who mysteriously vanished some time ago. Fellow illagers describe the suspect as universally unliked but when questioned could not give a reason to why. Not that it matters, this maniacal leader has already assembled a posse of corrupted illagers. Villagers should stay vigilant at all times until the proper authorities or rogue heroes can take this kingdom down.|Local Troublemaker Makes Trouble<ref name="Newspaper">{{Mcnet|search-arch-illager--part-1|Search for the Arch-Illager, Part 1|March 23, 2020|Sofia Dankis}}</ref>}}

==Overview==
===Enchantment slots===
{{MCD|Weapon}}s and {{MCD|armor}} each have up to three enchantment slots, with up to three random choices per slot. One enchantment can be selected from the available choices to apply onto the equipment. Each enchantment can be extended up to 3 tiers.
The number of available enchantment slots on collected equipment and the type of enchantments on them depends on the {{MCD|difficulty}} and the hero’s threat level. Unavailable enchantment slots or enchantment choices cannot be unlocked. All enchantments are either stackable, or non-stackable. Stackable enchantments be stacked up to three times.
Once an enchantment has been applied, the only way to clear it is to use the [[MCD:Blacksmith|Blacksmith]], which upgrades the item and returns all invested enchantment points, or the [[MCD:Enchantsmith|Enchantsmith]], which returns all invested [[MCD:Enchantment Point|enchantment points]] on a particular enchantment. Salvaging the item will also return all invested [[MCD:Enchantment Point|enchantment points]].
There are two types of enchantments: common and powerful. Common enchantments require less [[MCD:Enchantment Point|enchantment points]] than powerful enchantments.
Gilded items have increased Enchantment Point costs.

Enchantments behave independently when stacked. A weapon with two {{MCD|Chains}} III, each having a 30% chance to occur, does not give a 60% chance to occur, but instead a combined 51% chance, including a 9% chance that the effect occurs twice.
=== Built-in enchantments===
When dealing with equipment possessing a built-in enchantment, that enchantment is unavailable as a choice to apply onto that particular piece of equipment, even if the built-in enchantment is normally stackable. (However, it will still start with that enchantment) For example, the [[MCD:Diamond Pickaxe|diamond pickaxe]] never has {{MCD|Prospector}} as an option, the [[MCD:Firebolt Thrower|firebolt thrower]] never has {{MCD|Chain Reaction}} as an option, the [[MCD:Nimble Turtle Armor|nimble turtle armor]] never has {{MCD|Rush}} as an option, and so on.
The only exception to this is in {{MCD|the Tower}}, where the {{MCD|uniquesmith}} can turn a normal {{MCD|item}} into a {{MCD|Rarity|unique}} item while keeping its enchantments.
Built-in enchantments are shown as the enchantment icon with an orange border on the equipment's properties list and are visible in-game through the enchantment notification icon and enchantment effects. Also, the [[MCD:Status Effect|Status Effect icon]] relating to the enchantment appears on the [[MCD:Heads-up display|Heads-Up Display]] upon the use of non-enchanted equipment. Enchantments that are built-in cannot be upgraded, altered, or removed.
=== Soul enchantments===
Enchantments that involve souls, with the exceptions of [[Dungeons:Bag of Souls|Bag of Souls]] and [[Dungeons:Soul Focus|Soul Focus]], occur only on [[MCD:Weapon|weapons]] and [[MCD:Armor|armor]] that provide soul gathering naturally, such as the [[MCD:Soul Knife|soul knife]], [[MCD:Soul Bow|soul bow]], or [[MCD:Soul Robe|soul robe]] and their respective unique variants.
Soul gathering equipment can possess non-soul enchantments the same as regular equipment.
{{MCD|Anima Conduit}}, {{MCD|Enigma Resonator}}, and {{MCD|Soul Siphon}} are soul enchantments that occur on both melee and ranged weapons. {{MCD|Soul Speed}} occurs on armor.
===Gilded gear===
[[File:Gilded Items.png|thumb|Gilded gear in the inventory.]]
<!--- [[File:Piglin Merchant gilded item.png|thumb|A gilded item being sold by the piglin merchant.]]--->
{{For|a list of Ancients and the gilded gear they drop|MCD:Ancient}}
Gilded gear is obtainable to a maximum power of 263. Gilded gear can be obtained by:
* Defeating [[MCD:Ancient|ancient]] mobs during {{MCD|Ancient Hunts}}
* Bartering with the [[MCD:Piglin Merchant|Piglin Merchant]] using gold.
* Completing the [[MCD:Tower|Tower]] when at a high enough level.
'''Gilded gear''' is [[MCD:Melee Weapons|melee weapons]], [[MCD:Ranged Weapons|ranged weapons]] and [[MCD:Armor|armor]] that possess an extra built-in enchantment at tier I, II, or III. Gilded gear have increased [[MCD:Enchantment Point|enchantment costs]] to activate and upgrade the enchantments within the slots. Gilded items appear in the inventory with a gilded gold background and a golden tag adjacent to the {{MCD|rarity}}. On lower difficulties, the hero may receive a tier I enchantment, but on higher levels the hero can receive up to a tier III enchantment.
All weapons and armor currently in the game have gilded variants that can be bought or dropped from a certain [[MCD:Enchanted|ancient]] mob. Prior to the release of [[MCD:1.12.0.0|1.12.0.0]], a DLC-exclusive ancient mob like [[MCD:The Swarm|the Swarm]] drops items exclusive to the DLC it comes from.
Gilded gear can be [[MCD:Inventory#Salvaging|salvaged]] for gold rather than the usual {{MCD|emeralds}} with regular gear. {{MCD|Ancient Hunts}} do not allow gilded gear to be used as an offering.
[[MCD:Seasonal Trials|Special event items]] equipment can be obtained gilded through the Tower.
===Enchanted mobs===
{{Main|Enchanted Mobs|Ancient Mobs}}
Enchanted mobs are glowing, slightly larger mobs with 1 or more additional properties that make them more of a threat to heroes compared to standard mobs. Enchantments can be applied onto {{MCD|mob}}s from an [[MCD:Enchanter|enchanter]], the {{MCD|Arch-Illager}} or spawn with enchantments. Passive mobs such as [[MCD:Sheep|sheep]], and neutral mobs can also appear with enchantments. Some of these enchantments, such as {{MCD|Heal Allies}} and {{MCD|Regeneration}} are exclusive to mobs and not available to heroes.

== List of location types ==

=== Missions ===
{{main|MCD:Mission}}
Missions are traversable levels that are selected and entered from the [[MCD:Mission Select|mission select]] map in Camp. Unlike secret missions, missions play a short [[MCD:Cinematic|cinematic]] upon entering that features a voiceover. Most of them are required to progress the story, and many are DLC-exclusive. Missions can be found on the [[MCD:Mainland|mainland]], in the [[MCD:Island Realms|island realms]], or in [[MCD:Other Dimensions|other dimensions]]. Missions can contain required sub dungeons, optional sub dungeons, and [[MCD:Scroll|scrolls]] that unlock secret missions.
=== Secret missions ===
{{main|MCD:Secret Mission}}
Secret missions are traversable levels much like missions, however they must be unlocked by collecting scrolls in order to select them on the mission select map. Unlike missions, secret missions do not play any cinematics upon entering, and none of them are required to progress the story. The scrolls that are used to unlock secret missions are typically found in optional sub dungeons, a type of side location found within missions.
=== Sub-missions ===
{{main|MCD:Sub-mission}}
A sub-mission is a short traversable level that is only found in [[MCD:Ancient Hunt|ancient hunts]]. Each ancient hunt will contain three distinct sub-missions. Sub-missions are the only type of location in the game that can generate [[MCD:Door|hunt doors]], which lead to [[MCD:Gold Room|gold rooms]] and [[MCD:Ancient Dungeon|ancient dungeons]].
=== Camp ===
{{main|MCD:Camp}}
Camp is the main hub location in ''Minecraft Dungeons'', and essentially acts as the game's lobby. It contains the mission select table used to access missions and secret missions, as well as containing the [[MCD:Nether Room|Nether Room]], an optional sub dungeon used to access ancient hunts. Additionally, it contains the entrance to {{MCD|The Tower}}, as well as several [[MCD:Camp Merchant|camp merchants]] that can upgrade and sell items.
=== Sub dungeons ===
{{main|MCD:Sub Dungeon}}
A sub dungeon is a smaller location within a larger location, and is always accessed through a [[MCD:Door|door]]. Certain sub dungeons are required, and always spawn 100% of the time. Other sub dungeons are optional, and have varying spawn chances. Tower floor types are an example of a required sub dungeon, while [[MCD:Endersent Dungeon|endersent dungeons]], [[MCD:Rune Room|rune rooms]], and ancient dungeons are an example of an optional sub dungeon. Optional sub dungeons often contain higher tier reward [[MCD:Chest|chests]], and some contain scrolls that can be collected to unlock secret missions.

== General behavior ==
Properties all entities have are:
* A position, rotation, and velocity
* A volume consisting of one or more non-rotating, three-dimensional [[wikipedia:Rectangular cuboid|boxes]] with a fixed height and width
* The ability to be on [[fire]], displayed as flames on or around the entity
* The ability to have a [[status effect]], such as from [[potion]]s
* A [[view point]], even if it has no eyes
Most entities can be pushed around by [[water]] currents, and some can have their trajectory altered by [[explosion]]s if already traveling at speed. Some entities can be renamed by {{control|using}} a [[name tag]] on them. Entity tiles, [[item]]s, shot or thrown projectiles, area effect clouds, and [[experience orb]]s do not have [[health]]. Entities that do have a health status include [[mob]]s, [[player]]s, [[armor stand]]s, [[boat]]s, [[boat with chest]]s and [[minecart]]s.
Entities cannot pass through [[solid block]]s, excluding [[vex]]es and [[ender dragon]]s. Most types of entities prevent blocks from being placed in the space they occupy, except for dropped items and experience orbs, which are automatically pushed out of the block to open air. If a solid block enters an entity's space, such as falling [[sand]] or a swinging [[door]], then it is free to move out of the solid block but not back in. For example, if a door is closed on the player, player can jump up and stand on top of the bottom-half door block, if there is air above the door.
Entities are lit according to the [[light]] level of the block their position is in. For example, if a [[minecart]] runs over a non-straight track directly into a solid block, it turns black because solid blocks always have a light level of 0; [[arrow]]s are also sometimes seen to turn black, especially if fired shallowly into the ceiling.
=== Further notes ===
[[Item frame]]s, [[glow item frame]]s, [[painting]]s, and [[lead]] knots, unlike most entities, align to the block grid, and are completely immobile.
Arrows, TNT and falling blocks are assumed to have infinite health, because they are neither destroyed by explosions (although they can be ''moved'' by explosions, and they can also be fired out of [[Tutorials/Mechanisms#Mechanisms|TNT cannons]]), nor by being on fire for long periods. However, they can still be "killed" with the use of the {{cmd|kill}} command.
<!--When a block is placed on some entities, the block may disappear but might be restored if placed again.{{Needs testing|Sometimes the block is placed, then disappears, but if the entity moves and the block is placed again by your apparently empty hand, the block reappears. Maybe a bug? Maybe a workaround for the temporary conflict?}}
-->
==== Boats, boat with chests and minecarts ====
{{Hatnote|See also: [[Transportation]] (contains information about speed)}}
Boats, boats with chests and minecarts appear to recover health over time. For example, they can be broken by hitting them quickly, but cannot be destroyed by hits with unarmed hand with a pause after each hit. The amount of wobbling displayed by boats and minecarts when struck appears to indicate their current health. All minecart, boat and boat with chest variants have {{hp|6}}.
==== Gravity-affected blocks ====
{{main|Falling Block}}
[[File:Caved-in monster room.png|thumb|right|Sand that collapsed into a [[monster room]]. Before landing, each sand block would have been an entity.]]
Gravity-affected blocks include [[sand]], [[gravel]], [[anvil]]s, [[red sand]], [[dragon egg]]s, [[concrete powder]], [[scaffolding]], and [[pointed dripstone]], along with [[snow]] layers {{in|bedrock}}.
A gravity-affected block normally exists as a block, but when its support is removed, it becomes a [[falling block]] entity and falls down until hitting the top surface of another block. If there is valid space, it places itself as a block at the nearest on-grid position, or drops as an [[item (entity)|item]] if that position is occupied by a block without a solid top surface, such as a [[torch]] or a bottom [[slab]].
While a falling block ordinarily falls straight down, its trajectory can be affected by [[explosion]]s, [[bubble column]]s, [[piston]]s, [[Fishing|reeling]] it in, and moving [[slime block]]s, and can slide down the side of [[honey block]]s. It is also possible to modify the velocity and direction of a falling block by using [[commands]] such as {{cmd|data}}{{only|java}} or third-party programs. A falling block despawns and drops as an item if it does not land after existing for 600 [[tick]]s (30 seconds), or 100 ticks (5 seconds) if falling into the [[void]]{{verify}}.
If a cave generates underneath sand, gravel, or red sand, the blocks remain stationary until it receives a [[block update]]. If a single block is updated and falls down, neighboring blocks are updated in a chain reaction that can cause the collapse of an entire region of gravity-affected blocks.
==== Interactions with "use" control ====
Entities with {{control|use}} interactions (such as [[boat]]s, [[boat with chest]]s, [[minecart]]s, [[cat]]s, [[villager]]s, tamed [[parrot]]s, and tamed [[wolves]]) do not stop the {{control|use}} action of a tool the player is holding. For example, {{control|using}} a [[water bucket]] on a tamed wolf causes the wolf to sit, but also empties the bucket near or onto the wolf.
==== Riding ====
[[File:Skeleton-spider-desert.png|thumb|right|A spider jockey.]]
Entities may be riding on, or attached to, other entities. When this is the case, only the lower/"outer" entity's volume collides with other things, and only that entity can control movement.{{only|java}} However, there are exceptions: players riding [[minecart]]s, [[boat]]s, [[boats with chests]], or saddled [[horse]]s, baby [[zombie]]s riding [[chicken]]s, and [[skeleton]]s riding horses or boats.
The only current legitimate combinations of riding entities are:
* A [[mob]] or [[player]] in a [[minecart]], [[boat]] or [[boat with chest]]s.
* A boat or boat with chest in a minecart{{only|Java}}<ref>{{bug|MC-113871}}</ref>.
* A player on a saddled [[pig]], [[horse]], [[donkey]], [[mule]], [[skeleton horse]], [[llama]], [[strider]], or [[camel]].
* Any type of [[skeleton]] on a [[spider]] or [[cave spider]]{{only|bedrock}}; also known as a [[spider jockey]].
* Any type of baby [[zombie]] or [[zombified piglin]]{{only|java}} on a [[chicken]] or other mobs{{only|bedrock}}; also known as a [[chicken jockey]].
* [[Skeleton]]s riding [[skeleton horse]]s.
* [[Pillager]], [[vindicator]], or [[evoker]] riding a [[ravager]].
* Baby [[piglin]], riding a baby [[hoglin]].
* Baby piglin, riding a baby piglin on a baby hoglin.
* Baby piglin, riding a baby piglin, riding a baby piglin on a baby hoglin.
* A [[strider]], riding another strider.
* [[Zombified piglin]] riding a strider.
A [[parrot]] perched on [[player]]'s shoulder isn't considered as riding.
It is possible to have even more levels, such as a baby [[piglin]] on another baby piglin who is riding a [[hoglin]] in a [[minecart]] in a [[boat]].
Entities can also be stacked on top of each other with the use of the {{cmd|summon}} and {{cmd|data}} commands {{in|java}}. For example, using {{cmd|summon spider ~ ~ ~ {Passengers:[{id:skeleton}]} }} summons a [[spider jockey]], or using {{cmd|ride}} {{in|bedrock}}.
If an entity is riding another entity, the top entity cannot teleport because as soon as the teleport is made, the entity is teleported back to riding the other entity.{{only|java}}
Starting from the [[Nether Update]], entities that are riders or passengers of other entities cannot [[despawn]].{{verify}}{{only|java}}

This is a list of community projects on Minecraft Wiki. Project pages provide a space for editors to coordinate their work and share progress.
[{{fullurl:Minecraft Wiki:Projects|action=watch}} Add this page] to your [[Special:Watchlist|watchlist]] and stay on top of things.
== How to make a new project ==
Create a new page in the Minecraft Wiki namespace which has the name of your project. For instance, if you wanted to make a project to document all food healing values, you could make the page "Minecraft Wiki:Projects/Healing values".
The project page itself should be clear on what the project is trying to achieve. It may include things like:
* An overview of what the project aims to do.
* A detailed to-do list for the project.
* New objectives can be created as old ones are completed.
Once the project page is ready, remember to add {{t|project status}} and add it to the list of current projects below. If the project is going to use multiple pages, add {{t|project}} to it and all pages and categories within the project.
If the project can be done by a single editor in a reasonable amount of time, then it should go into [[MCW:Pending tasks]].

{{for|the guidelines that outline whether an article should be made|Minecraft Wiki:Notability}}
{{shortcut|MCW:STYLE|MCW:SG}}
This article aims to provide a comprehensive '''style guide''' for all Minecraft Wiki articles to follow.
There are often disputes over which style rule or formatting to use so an official style guide helps resolve these disputes and reach a consensus.
Although Wikipedia already provides a more general [[WP:Manual of Style|style guide]], a more specific one is necessary for ''Minecraft''-specific guidelines. As such, only guidelines pertaining to the Minecraft Wiki and its basic formatting rules are included here. If any contradiction arises, this page always has precedence over its subpages and the Wikipedia style guide.
== Article titles ==
{{shortcut|MCW:TITLE}}
Article titles should generally be written in singular form, except in-game features with plural names (e.g. "[[Boots]]").
Articles should follow a general naming format based on the type.
* An article about any feature with an in-game name should use the same capitalization as the name. For example, "[[Eye of Ender]]" is correct, since the eye of ender is called "Eye of Ender" in the game.
** The title of an article about a game mechanic, not an individual feature or features in the game, should be written like a heading (see [[MCW:HEADING]]). For example, "Tutorials/Eye of ender farming" should not use the item name "Eye of Ender", since the article would not solely be about the eye of ender, and it should not have a convoluted name, like "Tutorials/Farm for eyes of ender in the end".
** An article about a technical feature, such as NBT, should use its name as it appears in the game's code. If the feature doesn't have a name in the code, then its title should be written like a heading.
** If the feature does not have an in-game name, it should follow the same format as other articles of the same type. For example, the mob "[[Spider Jockey]]"
** If the article is about multiple similar features, the title should equally represent all the titles. For example, an article about wooden and iron doors would be called "[[Door]]". Also, the name should follow the same format as the names of those features. An article about doors made of wood would be called "[[Wooden Door]]" because wooden tools in the game use a similar naming convention.
** If the feature has different names in ''Java'' and ''Bedrock Edition'', the ''Java Edition'' name should be used.
*** If the ''Java Edition'' name would require a disambiguation but the ''Bedrock Edition'' name won't, the ''Bedrock Edition'' name should be used.
** If the feature has no display name in any edition, the ID of the feature in ''Java Edition'' should be used.
*** If the feature has no display name in ''Java'' or ''Bedrock Edition'', but does have a display name in some other edition, the display name from that edition should be the article's title.
*** If the feature doesn't exist in ''Java Edition'', it should use the display name or ID in the most relevant edition it exists in.
* Articles about people should use their first name and last name rather than their ''Minecraft'' or Twitter/X handle.
* Tutorial articles should be located in the Tutorial namespace and should not contain "How to".
* If the article's type is unlisted, it should use the most relevant title in [[WP:LOWERCASE|sentence case]], not title case, unless it is a proper noun. This also applies to some non-article pages, such as category, template, and project pages.
== Writing ==
{{see also|Help:Official sources}}
This wiki's purpose is to document facts. Therefore, always avoid personal commentary, speculation, and unsourced information. Generally speaking, information does not require sources if they can directly be seen in-game or are otherwise obvious. Other information however, such as quotes from [[Mojang Studios]] employees and information that is not widely known, must be sourced with a proper reference. The {{t|citation needed}} template should be placed after any information that requires a source. Do ''not'' add content to an article without a proper source.
Articles in the main namespace should always be written in the third-person perspective and without terms referential to the reader ("you", "your", etc.). The exception to this is tutorial pages, where in most cases "you" is the most appropriate pronoun to use when referring to the player. Try not to use abbreviations of words either. For instance, sentences like "You shouldn't come close to creepers because they'll explode and kill you." should be written as "A player can be killed by approaching a creeper close enough to cause it to explode."
To emphasize points, ''italics'' should be used, not '''bold''' or ALL CAPS.
Tutorial information should be present ''only'' in tutorial articles. This includes navigational features of blocks or textures. Tutorials may be linked from other articles if relevant though.
=== Keeping articles concise and up to date ===
{{shortcut|MCW:UPTODATE}}
In short, articles should contain only information that is up to date, i.e., implemented in the latest ''full'' version of the game. Anything that is outdated should be moved to the History section of the article. When something changes, note the change in the History section and remove the outdated information from other sections of the article. It is unnecessary to mention when a particular feature was implemented; this is once again reserved for the History section of the article. Sentences such as "[[Trading]], which was implemented in 1.3.1, is a feature that allows players to exchange [[emerald]]s (previously [[Ruby|rubies]]) for other items." should be written as "Trading is a feature that allows players to exchange emeralds for other items."
Here's an example of how to ''not'' write a good article. It uses a previous version of the [[Log]] article, which at the time was called Wood. This is the full introduction. Highlighted in <span style="background:yellow; color:#202122;">yellow</span> is the redundant information, and in <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;>pink</span> the history information.
<div style="border:1px solid black; padding: 10px;">
'''Wood''' <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">(previously known as '''log''')</span> is a type of block <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">first seen in ''Minecraft'' 0.0.14a</span>. They have a skin resembling bark on the four side faces, and a crosscut face on top and bottom. <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">Only the normal oak logs are available in chunks generated before the Beta 1.2 update and all previous versions, while pine and birch generate in newer chunks</span>. Wood is greatly abundant in naturally-generated maps, as it is used as the foundation for trees. Wood can be chopped by hand, but using an axe is faster. Wood is also flammable.
Of the <span style="background:yellow; color:#202122;">current</span> wood types, birch is the rarest type. <span style="background:yellow; color:#202122;">They are often used to make plants, trees and wooden cabins.</span> <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">In Survival Test, wood blocks drop 3–5 wooden planks when mined. In Indev, Infdev, Alpha, and Beta, mining a wood block drops a wood block instead</span>. <span style="background:yellow; color:#202122;">This allows the use of wood as a building material and is craftable into planks</span>.
<span style="background:yellow; color:#202122;">Wood's only crafting use is to be made into four wooden planks</span>. In addition, wood can be burned in a furnace to make charcoal as a substitute for coal.
<span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">As of the Minecraft Beta 1.2 update on January 13, 2011, there are now four kinds of wood</span>. <span style="background:yellow; color:#202122;">One is the normal wood (oak), another resembles the wood of silver birch trees, yet another type resembles the normal wood, but it is darker and appears in pine/conifer trees that grow in colder biomes, the fourth type is similar to the oak wood, however there are some color differences and it is tilted to one side.</span> Wood blocks produce 4 wooden planks when crafted. Wood from different types of trees do not stack in the inventory. <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">Planks made from different kinds of trees used to be completely identical</span>. Birch trees have slightly duller colored leaves than regular trees, pine trees have pine needles, and jungle leaves are leafy with fruit looking shapes on them.
The fourth type of wood <span style="background:pink; color:#202122;">was introduced in snapshot 12w03a</span>, solely occurring in jungle biomes, and comprising trees exclusive to them. The tallest trees have this type of wood in 2x2 dimensions instead of the normal 1x1.</div>
The issue with this is that old information is scattered with new information. The introduction should state the current description of the block with the current release. History information is good, but for clarity, it should be described in the chronological order in a single place: the History section of the article.
==== Future ====
{{shortcut|MCW:FUTURE}}
Content added in future updates may be added to the article in the main content, provided the features are marked using {{tl|Upcoming}} / {{tl|OnlyUpcoming}}. Features to be removed in a future update should be marked with {{tl|Until}}. Changes to existing features should use {{tl|OnlyUpcoming}} where possible, since it can be used inline. {{tl|Upcoming}} should be used for major features or major changes to features. The feature, features, or changes marked by Upcoming can be put in a section of an article, if appropriate. In some articles, it is helpful to put upcoming features and changes in a section called "Upcoming", and in other articles, the name of the new feature or changes might be more appropriate. Upcoming features must be noted as well in the {{tl|HistoryTable}} section, using the proper upcoming header.
When the update containing an upcoming feature releases, features marked with {{tl|Until}} must either be moved to the history section or removed, and any usage of {{tl|Upcoming}} / {{tl|OnlyUpcoming}} may be removed.
Information about future updated should always be valid. Valid information includes anything that is tested in '''development versions''' and anything that is '''officially announced by Mojang'''. A list of official websites and sources can be found on [[Help:Official sources]].
* Hints from minecraft.net should be taken with a grain of salt, because the writers include a lot of jokes and like to make things sound more extravagant than they need to be.
* Much of the information from the series of the ''"Minecraft" YouTube channel'' also should not be taken seriously. Some videos on the channel are clearly made as trailers or announcements for development versions that get released shortly afterward, but this is not always the case.
* Mojang makes a lot of other posts on social media platforms too. Keep in mind that some posts are designed to encourage speculation in the community.
* In conclusion, do not add speculation to the content of articles on this wiki. Speculation might be appropriate for a talk page, but we don't want to confuse our readers with false information.
=== Quotes ===
All quotes should be copied verbatim. Any additional content added within the quotation marks must be enclosed in square brackets. Terminal punctuation must go inside the quote only if it is in the original; otherwise, it must go outside. If the quote contains an error that was present in the original, add {{t|sic}} after that text to show readers that it is not a transcription mistake.
=== Spelling ===
{{shortcut|MCW:SPELLING}}
Pages on this wiki should use ''American English'' because this is the default localization used by ''[[Minecraft]]''. Exceptions are when the in-game name is British English, or when British spelling is used inside quotations.
The differences between American and British spelling can be subtle, typically in how the word ends. The following examples often arise:
* Words ending in "-our": "colour" should be "color", "behaviour" should be "behavior", "armour" should be "armor"
* Words ending in "-tre": "centre" should be "center", "metre" should be "meter"
* Direction indicators ending in "-wards": "towards" should be "toward", "forwards" should be "forward", "upwards" should be "upward" and so on
* Words with the "-st" affectation: "whilst" should be "while", "amongst" should be "among", "amidst" should be "amid"
* Words with "-ise" or "yse" suffixes: "organise", "analysing", and "realisation" should be "organize", "analyzing", and "realization", respectively
* Words ending in "-nce": "defence" should be "defense"
* Verbs ending in "-ling": "travelling" should be "traveling"
* Verbs ending with "t": "spelt" should be "spelled", "learnt" should be "learned", "burnt" should be "burned"
=== Terminology ===
All content is to be referred to solely through in-game names, when applicable.
Baby [[mob]]s are not to be referred to by real-world animal equivalent names (such as "puppy" for a baby [[wolf]] or "cub" for a baby [[fox]]). They are to be referred to only as a "Baby" of whatever the mob in question is.
The only exception is terms that Mojang have coined for creatures unique to ''Minecraft'', such as "snifflet" for a baby [[sniffer]]. An applicable citation must be provided when this is the case.
=== Capitalization ===
{{Shortcut|MCW:CAPS}}
In-game items should be treated as common nouns and as such ''should not'' be capitalized, unless they start a new sentence. This includes fictional items, such as [[prismarine]]. Proper nouns, however, such as [[the Nether]] or the [[Overworld]] ''should'' always be capitalized.
==== Do not capitalize ====
;In-game items
In-game items (weapons, armor, tools, objects, blocks, fictional items) are common nouns and should not be capitalized unless they start a new sentence.
Examples:
:''A [[conduit]] requires a [[prismarine]] frame in order to activate.''
:''This mob uses a [[MCD:Scatter Crossbow|scatter crossbow]].''
:''To mine [[diamond ore]], a player must use an [[iron pickaxe]] or better.''
;Structures and biomes
In-game structures and biome names should not be capitalized.
Examples:
:''Underground, there are randomly generated [[mineshaft|mineshafts]].''
:''A [[desert pyramid]] contains some rare loot.''
:''Blazes spawn in [[nether fortress|nether fortresses]].''
:''In deep ocean biomes, [[monument|monuments]] can generate.''
:''A [[stronghold]] is home to an [[end portal]].''
;Mobs
Any instance of a mob (including mini-boss mobs) should be treated as a common noun, except where the mob is referred to using a proper noun. If the word "the" is used before the mob name, it should not be capitalized unless it is at the beginning of the sentence.
Examples:
:''One of the most feared mobs is the [[ghast]].''
:''A [[cave spider]] can poison its prey.''
:''The player has been referred to as [[Steve]].''
;Edition adjectives and descriptors
"Experimental snapshot", "snapshot", "pre-release", and "release candidate" should not be capitalized, except in cases where they are capitalized in the game itself, in which case they should be capitalized only within the context of the name itself. "Pre-release" should always be hyphenated.
;''Minecraft Dungeons''
In addition to the instances above, do not capitalize the names of [[MCD:Unique|unique]] items or hostile mob attacks.
==== Do capitalize ====
;Enchantments
Enchantment names should always be capitalized.
Example:
:''In order to have ice drop an item, a tool enchanted with Silk Touch must be used.''
;Status effects
Status effect names should be capitalized, except where they are used as an adjective.
Examples:
:''Magma cream is required for a potion of Fire Resistance.''
:''Wither skeletons may inflict Wither on the player.''
:''An invisible spider may rarely spawn.''
;Editions
Editions should be capitalized only when used as nouns.
Development phases should be capitalized.
Examples:
:''Minecraft: Java Edition officially came out of [[Java Edition Beta|Beta]] on November 18, 2011.''
:''The rose, with an exclusive texture, was introduced in [[Pocket Edition v0.1.0 alpha]].''
:''Of all the editions of Minecraft, only the Pocket and Pi Editions have blue [[rose|roses]].''
;Game modes and difficulty
The name of game modes and difficulty should be capitalized.
Examples:
:''In [[Hardcore]] mode the game acts similar to [[Survival]] mode except the difficulty is permanently set to Hard, and you cannot respawn.''
;''Minecraft Dungeons''
Some features unique to ''[[Minecraft Dungeons]]'' are treated as proper nouns, similar to enchantments and status effects, so they should be capitalized. These features are:
* [[MCD:Ancient mob|Ancient mobs]] and primary [[MCD:Boss|boss mobs]]
* [[MCD:Location|Locations]]
;''Minecraft: Story Mode'' and ''Minecraft: Story Mode - Season Two''
* In ''[[Minecraft: Story Mode]]'' and ''[[Minecraft: Story Mode - Season Two]]'', given names of towns, cities, and villages should always be capitalized.
* Names of characters should always be capitalized.
* Given names of teams and groups should be capitalized if they're capitalized in-game.
* Names of events such as EnderCon should be capitalized only if they're capitalized in-game.
* Names of worlds and dimensions should be capitalized only if they're capitalized in-game.
* In rare cases in which the name has two variations, capitalized and not capitalized, the capitalized spelling takes preference.
Examples:
:''The [[Minecraft Story Mode:Wither Storm|wither storm]] destroyed the building at [[Minecraft Story Mode:EnderCon|EnderCon]].''
:''[[Minecraft Story Mode:Olivia|Olivia]] is a friend of [[Minecraft Story Mode:Jesse|Jesse]].''
:''The fate of [[Minecraft Story Mode:Build Club|Build Club]] is unknown.''
:''There is a llama statue in [[Minecraft Story Mode:Champion City|Champion City]].''
=== Section headings ===
{{shortcut|MCW:HEADING}}
* Article main sections should start with level 2 headings (<code><nowiki>== Heading ==</nowiki></code>) and increase by one for subsections. ''Never'' use a level 1 heading (<code><nowiki>= Heading =</nowiki></code>); this is reserved for the article title.
* Follow sentence style capitalization, not title style, so only the first letter of the heading and proper nouns are capitalized.
* Headings should not have links or templates in them; links should be placed underneath, such as in a {{tl|Main}} template.
* Although not required, having one space between sections and one space between the equal signs and the section name improves readability.
* Place any hatnotes and images immediately under the section heading, and then a space after those before the section content.
* Do not add blank sections unless tagged with {{t|empty section}} to request prompt expansion.
* For information on which sections should be in which order, see the [[#Article layout|Article layout]] section of this style guide.
=== Italics ===
{{shortcut|MCW:ITALICS}}
Any instance of "''Minecraft'' " should be in italics. Any instance of the name of a video game should also be in italics. For instance: "''Team Fortress 2''".
Official ''Minecraft'' edition names used as subtitles should be in italics. This applies (but is not limited) to:
* ''Java Edition''
* ''Bedrock Edition''
* ''Minecraft Education''
Italics should not be used for unofficial edition names, such as "Legacy Console Edition".
Additionally, if an edition name is also referring to a specific version, it should not be in italics. For instance: "Java Edition 1.16" should not be in italics, whereas "''Java Edition''" should.
=== Images ===
{{shortcut|MCW:IMAGES}}
{{See also|Help:Isometric renders}}
;Screenshots
* Screenshots must use vanilla textures and UI.
* Screenshots that use custom textures or resource packs, UI mods, and other custom content are ''generally'' not allowed, with the following exceptions:
** Historical images of missing versions,
** Hiding UI elements for the purpose of improving clarity of the image subject,
** In cases where a resource pack is necessary, in which case the caption should mention the modification; for example, an image illustrating a retextured cow would have its caption make it clear that the cow has been retextured using a resource pack.
* Screenshots of biomes must not be isometric.
;Captions
Image captions should not have periods at the end, unless the phrase is a full sentence.
;Official artwork and logos
Pursuant to a [[Minecraft Wiki:Community portal/Microsoft status update|request from Microsoft]], official artwork and logos are not allowed to be displayed inside an article's infobox.
The scope of disallowed images includes packaging artwork, update key arts, game logos, or any artwork produced by Mojang. It does not include any other images, such as block or mob renders and game screenshots.
This rule applies to all pages. Artwork can be used elsewhere on the page, such as in galleries, or ''below'' an infobox, but not as the infobox image.
;Upscaling textures
Generally, textures should be uploaded as their original resolutions, and therefore should not be upscaled. The exceptions to this are item and effect icons, though original resolutions versions of these textures should still be provided via the gallery.
;General guidelines
* Images should showcase an attribute of the article's topic.
** Images should not show unintended strange or humorous behavior, such as mobs "sitting" on stairs.
** Images should not have the sole purpose of showcasing a bug, instead report the bug on the [http://bugs.mojang.com official tracker].
** Images showcasing usage of specific features as part of player builds should be avoided.
* Articles should have one image showcasing an individual attribute of the articles content. For example, a zombie wearing armor.
* Images should showcase the most up-to-date version of Minecraft available for the content. Outdated images are subject to removal or replacement with current versions.
=== Linking ===
{{shortcut|MCW:LINK}}
:''For a longer discussion on wiki linking, please refer to Wikipedia's [[wp:Manual of Style/Linking|Manual of Style for links]], although do note that some of the policies about linking there are different from here.''
The use of links is a difficult balance between providing readers enough useful links to allow them to "wander through" articles and excessive linking that can distract them from their reading flow.
Underlinking can cause the reader to become frustrated because questions may arise about the article's contents, which can be resolved only by using the search option or other sources for clarification, interrupting and distracting the reader.
Overlinking may distract the reader because links are usually colored differently causing the eye to shift focus constantly. Additionally, if the same word is linked multiple times in the same paragraph it can cause the reader to question if the links are directing them to different articles or not.
The guidelines for linking are:
* No more than 10 percent of the words in an article are contained in links.
* Unless it affects the sentence's wording and readability in a negative way, two links should not be next to each other in the text so that it looks like one link.
* Links for any single term should not be excessively repeated in the same article. Excessive linking is defined as linking the same term multiple times within a portion of text that can fit on a typical viewer's screen. Remember, the purpose of links is to direct the reader to a new spot at the point(s) where the reader is most likely to take a temporary detour due to needing more information.
* Duplicating an important link distant from a previous occurrence in an article may well be appropriate. If an important term appears many times in a long article, but is linked only once at the beginning of the article, it may actually be underlinked. Indeed, readers who jump directly to a subsection of interest must still be able to find a link. But take care in fixing such problems, the distance between duplicate links is an editor's preference; however, if in doubt, duplicate the term further down the article.
Linking to a redirect is preferred over using a piped link except in templates and other pages that are transcluded. When a piped link is unavoidable, it should not point to a redirect. If a redirect can be avoided using a suffix on the link, that is preferred. E.g. Using <code><nowiki>[[Creeper]]s</nowiki></code> instead of <code><nowiki>[[Creepers]]</nowiki></code> is desired.
==== Sprite links ====
{{shortcut|MCW:SPRITE}}
When listing in-game features such as blocks and items, it is common to use a '''sprite link''' template, which displays a small image before a link. Sprite links can be useful for illustrating subjects, but creates clutter within text. Therefore:
* '''Use sprite links only in non-sentence lists.''' They should not be used in prose; instead, the regular link format should be used.
For example, the following use of sprite links is '''incorrect''':
<div style="border:1px solid black; padding: 10px;">
An '''armadillo''' is a [[passive mob]] found in {{BiomeLink|badlands}} and {{BiomeLink|savanna}}s. It rolls up in response to being hurt or being near [[undead]] mobs or {{EntityLink|player}}s that are sprinting or mounted. While in this state, it takes less damage. It also repels {{EntityLink|spider}}s and {{EntityLink|cave spider}}s away from it. It is the only source of {{ItemLink|armadillo scute}}s, which the armadillo sheds over time, as well as when it is {{ItemLink|brush}}ed.
</div>
Whereas, for example, the following uses of sprite links are '''correct''':
<div style="border:1px solid black; padding: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px">

* {{BiomeLink|Eroded Badlands}}
* {{BiomeLink|Wooded Badlands}}

=== Date and time formatting ===
The Minecraft Wiki is an international community. That is a good thing in general, but it makes a problem for numeric abbreviations of dates, such as "12/10/11": while most countries abbreviate dates as day/month/year, some Asian countries use year/month/day, and the US uses month/day/year. So the above date could represent any of three different dates. To avoid this problem, most dates should be written in "Month DD, YYYY" format, ''e.g.'' "December 10, 2011". Do not use superscripts or suffixes such as "April 23rd" or "4th of May". If a numeric or terse date is needed (such as in a table), then use YYYY-MM-DD, always with 2 digits for month and day (''e.g.'', 2011-12-10 or 2012-05-04). Besides being the [[wikipedia:ISO 8601|ISO standard]], dates in this format naturally sort properly, say if the table column is later made sortable.
For similar reasons, all times should be written using UTC in the 24-hour format such as "17:00 UTC", for combined date times such as "December 10, 2011 at 17:00 UTC". For sorting, date times should also follow the ISO standard like "2012-05-04T17:00Z".
Try to avoid seasons for dates such as "Summer 2021" or "Fall 2022". On Earth, the northern and southern hemispheres have opposite seasons. Instead use phrases like "Mid-2021" or "Late 2022".
=== Coordinates ===
Single in-game coordinates should be capitalized and unspaced ("Y=1" instead of "y=1" or "y = 1"). Volumes should be in the order X, Y, Z, with each item separated only by a multiplication sign "×", which is available in the "Special characters/Symbols" group in the source editor, or use the HTML entity <code>&times;</code>. For example, "4×3×2" is an area that is 4 blocks wide along the X axis, 3 along the Y axis (vertical), and 2 along the Z axis. Further coordinate usage is [[Minecraft_Wiki_talk:Style_guide#Writing_coordinates|under discussion]].
=== Commands ===
{{main|Minecraft Wiki:Style guide/Commands}}
=== Edition version names ===
Specific versions on specific editions of the game should always be written as an '''edition version name'''. This rule applies to article titles, paragraphs, lists, and trivia sections.
Versions of ''Java Edition'' should be prefixed with "Java Edition" (e.g. Java Edition 1.8).
''Pocket Edition'' versions should be prefixed with "Pocket Edition". For example, the update known as "v0.9.0 alpha" in-game would be titled "[[Pocket Edition v0.9.0 alpha]]".
* ''Pocket Edition'' Alpha development builds should first contain the parent version title, then the lowercase word "build" followed by the build number. For example, build 2 for "0.9.0" would be titled "[[Pocket Edition v0.9.0 alpha build 2]]".
* ''Pocket Edition'' development builds should first contain the lowercase word "alpha" followed by the version number. For example, "1.1.0.1" would be titled "[[Pocket Edition alpha 1.1.0.1]]".
''Bedrock Edition'' versions should be prefixed with "Bedrock Edition". For example, the update "1.2.1" would be titled "[[Bedrock Edition 1.2.1]]".
* ''Bedrock Edition'' development builds should first contain the lowercase word "beta" followed by the version number. For example, "1.2.0.9" would be titled "[[Bedrock Edition beta 1.2.0.9]]".
Other versions should be prefixed with the edition. For example, the update "1.0.27" for ''Education Edition'' would be titled "[[Education Edition 1.0.27]]".
== Files ==
File names should be consistent so they are easier to find. Files used in the infobox of articles should be titled with the exact name of the subject as seen ingame using en-US (when possible), and must be an [[MCW:Render|isometric render]]. Old revisions of files should take the format of "''Subject'' JE''X'' BE''Y''", where ''X'' and ''Y'' are the revision numbers for ''Java Edition'' and ''Bedrock Edition'', respectively. This number is incremented each time the texture is updated in game (e.g., not in teaser images). "''Subject''" should redirect to the most recent revision. If the current textures for ''Java Edition'' and ''Bedrock Edition'' differ, "''Subject''" redirects to the ''Java Edition'' texture, while "''Subject'' BE" redirects to the ''Bedrock Edition'' texture. Textures added in snapshots should follow this naming convention, though "''Subject''" should not redirect to the texture until it is included in a full release.
For example, the texture files for cobblestone would go as follows:
* "Cobblestone JE1.png"
* "Cobblestone JE2 BE1.png"
* "Cobblestone JE3 BE2.png"
* "Cobblestone JE4.png"
* "Cobblestone JE5 BE3.png"
** "Cobblestone.png" redirects here.
The "''Subject'' JE''X'' BE''Y''" files should be used in places where the texture shouldn't change if the texture is updated, such as history sections and version guides. The "''Subject''" files should be used in places where the texture should always be up to date, such as infoboxes.
== Article layout ==
{{shortcut|MCW:LAYOUT}}
For the sake of consistency, all articles of a specific type should follow a general layout.
# [[Template:hatnote|Hatnote]]s (i.e. notes that belong at the very top of an article page)
# [[Template:Message box|Message boxes]]
# [[Template:Infobox|Infoboxes]]
# Introduction with a general description
# Article body (multiple sections; see {{slink||Specific layouts}} below)
# [[/Features#See also|See also]]
# Notes<ref group="note">i.e. footnotes, like this.</ref> and references<ref>[[w:Reference|Wikipedia: Reference]] – This is a reference.</ref>
# Applicable footer [[Template:Navbox|navboxes]]
# DEFAULTSORT
# [[Special:Categories|Categories]]
# [[Special:Interwiki#Interlanguage prefixes|Language interwikis]]
Be smart when adding a message box: too many boxes at the top of a page or a section is not useful, and they can clutter the page descriptions in search results. If there is already one, move the ones that are not necessary for the reader lower on the page, for example in a relevant section or at the end.
=== Specific layouts ===
If an article does not contain a layout currently, one can be proposed on the [[{{TALKPAGENAME}}|talk page]]; otherwise, attempt to use a layout that follows a similar style to an existing layout. Current article layouts include:
* [[/Features/]]
* [[/Redstone/]]
* [[/Blueprints/]]
* [[/Versions/]]

[[TNT]] is an explosive block in Minecraft that can be crafted using [[sand]] and [[gunpowder]]. This article explains how to use it safely and effectively.
== How to Ignite ==
There are multiple ways to ignite TNT. These include
*using a [[flint and steel]] or [[fire charge]] on it
*redstone signals
*striking it using a weapon enchanted with [[Flame]]
*allowing it to be present in the radius of nearby explosions
== After Ignition ==
If in Survival mode, run as far from the TNT as possible! You do not want to get killed by your own explosion.
Placing a block in front of your legs will reduce the damage done by an explosion.
== Uses ==
The uses of TNT include
*clearing land
*destroying structures
*discovering ores (especially [[ancient debris]])
*killing mobs or players
*[[Tutorials/Traps|traps]]
== Traps ==
TNT can also be used for mob/player [[Tutorials/Traps|traps]]. These require some [[Tutorials/Redstone|redstone]] skill. However, a simple one could be chaining a [[pressure plate]] to a block of TNT.
== What not to do ==
Never play with TNT. It can result in massive destruction of the world and your structures. Mass-detonating TNT in particular can generate enormous amounts of lag, crashing your game.
In a massive multiplayer server, [[Tutorials/Hiding chests|hide your]] TNT in a chest. Do not let others know about your TNT reserves.
Never accidentally detonate TNT by hitting it with a [[sword]] with [[Fire Aspect]] or a [[bow]] with [[Flame]].
Do not use excessive amounts of TNT. Additional damage is minimal and it is a huge waste of resources.
== Trivia ==
*When underwater, TNT does no damage to the terrain but still hurts mobs and players.
**However, in [[Minecraft Education]], there exists a variant of TNT called [[underwater TNT]] that is able to destroy blocks underwater.
*A creeper's explosion is 1.5× as powerful as TNT. For a charged creeper, it is 3x as powerful.
*TNT is generated naturally in [[desert pyramids]] and [[woodland mansion]]s.

'''''Minecraft''''' is a 3D {{w|sandbox game}} created by Swedish game developer [[Markus Persson|Markus "Notch" Persson]]. It is maintained by [[Mojang Studios]], a part of [[Xbox Game Studios]], which in turn is part of {{w|Microsoft}}.
From its creation, ''Minecraft'' was developed almost exclusively by Notch until [[Jens Bergensten|Jens "Jeb" Bergensten]] started working with him and has since become head of its development. It features [[music]] by [[Daniel Rosenfeld|Daniel "C418" Rosenfeld]], [[Kumi Tanioka]], [[Lena Raine]] and [[Aaron Cherof]], as well as [[painting]]s by [[Kristoffer Zetterstrand]] and [[Sarah Boeving]]. Initially released as what is now known as ''Minecraft'' [[Java Edition Classic|Classic]] on May 17, 2009, the game was [[Java Edition#Full release|fully released]] on November 18, 2011, after multiple updates. Since its release, ''Minecraft'' has expanded to mobile devices and consoles. On November 6, 2014, ''Minecraft'' and all of Mojang Studios' assets were acquired by {{w|Microsoft}} for US$2.5 billion.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20140915131835/https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-were-being-bought-by-microsoft/ Yes, we're being bought by Microsoft] - Mojang.com; September 15, 2014</ref><ref>{{tweet|xboxp3|530368089418784768|It’s official, today we welcome Mojang to the Microsoft Studios family. |
''Minecraft'' focuses on allowing the [[player]] to explore, interact with and modify a dynamically-generated [[Overworld|map]] made of one-cubic-meter-sized [[block]]s. In addition to blocks, the environment features [[plant]]s, [[mob]]s and [[item]]s. Some activities in the game include building, mining for [[ore]], fighting hostile mobs and [[crafting]] new blocks and [[tool]]s by gathering various resources found in the game. The game's open-ended model allows players to create [[structure]]s, creations and artwork on various [[Combat|competitive]] or collaborative [[multiplayer]] servers or their single-player maps. Other features include [[redstone circuits]] for logic computations and remote actions, [[minecart]]s and [[Rail|tracks]], and a mysterious underworld called [[the Nether]]. A designated but completely optional goal of the game is to travel to a dimension called [[the End]] and defeat the [[ender dragon]].

[[File:Steve (classic) JE6.png|thumb|left|150px|alt=Steve player character model|One of the nine default [[player]] skins, called [[Player#Steve|Steve]].]]
The player is the person that the user controls in the [[world]]. When the user starts a game, the player is put in a [[world]], generated from a random or specified [[Seed (world generation)|seed]], with an empty [[inventory]]. If the [[bonus chest]] option is enabled, a chest filled with basic items generates near the player. The player has a [[health]] bar with 10 hearts and can be depleted when they are [[damage]]d. Damage to health can be mitigated by [[armor]] or the [[Resistance]] effect; while health can be restored by keeping the [[hunger]] bar full enough or by drinking specific [[potion]]s. If the [[difficulty]] is set to Peaceful, health regenerates on its own.
Each player can have a unique look via 9 default [[skin]]s, or by creating their own custom skin. A player can change their skin on the profile page of [[minecraft.net]] or in the ''[[Minecraft Launcher]]'' {{in|JE}} and in the pause or main menus {{in|BE}}.

===Blocks===

{{main|Block}}
[[File:Ancient Greece.jpg|alt=A building based on a Greek acropolis.|thumb|280x280px|A building based on a Greek acropolis.]]
The world of ''Minecraft'' takes place within a {{w|Cubic honeycomb|three-dimensional grid of cubes}}, with each cube being occupied by a certain type of block, not all of which are necessarily cubic. There are different types of blocks; natural blocks such as [[Grass Block|grass]], [[stone]] and [[ore]]s that generate randomly within the world. There are also blocks that players can [[Crafting|craft]], such as a [[crafting table]] and a [[furnace]]. Resources can be extracted from blocks by hand or by using [[tools]]. Some of these resources are simply blocks in the player's inventory that can be placed elsewhere, while others are used as material to create other blocks or tools. Others yield no practical use whatsoever. Some blocks cannot be broken through normal Survival means, e.g. [[bedrock]], [[end portal frame]]s, [[command block]]s, [[Nether Portal (block)|nether]] and [[End Portal (block)|end portals]], [[barrier]]s and air.

===Mining===

{{main|Mining}}
[[File:MultipleOreBlobs.png|right|thumb|Various [[ore]]s (in proximity of [[lava]]) that can be mined with a [[pickaxe]].]]
[[Tutorials/Mining|Mining]] is one of the main aspects of ''Minecraft'' and is done to extract ore and other materials mainly from below the surface of the map. These ores include [[coal ore|coal]], [[iron ore|iron]], [[gold ore|gold]], [[redstone ore|redstone]], [[diamond ore|diamond]], [[lapis lazuli ore|lapis lazuli]], [[copper ore|copper]] and [[emerald ore|emerald]]. Mining can involve [[digging]] a hole from the surface or going down through a [[cave]]. [[Mineshaft]]s and [[ravine]]s create extra areas that may contain resources, since they are usually rich in ores.
===Crafting and smelting===
{{Main|Crafting|Smelting}}
[[File:Crafting Table.png|thumb|150px|left|A [[crafting table]] is used to create most of the blocks and items in ''Minecraft''.]]
[[Crafting]] allows players to create new tools and [[block]]s using items from their [[inventory]]. Subsequent versions often contain crafting [[recipe]]s for new blocks and [[item]]s. A player can use the 2×2 grid in the inventory or the 3×3 grid provided by a crafting table to craft. Smelting requires a [[furnace]] in addition to fuel and processes blocks into a more useful form such as from [[raw iron]] into [[iron ingot]]s, which can then be crafted into iron tools and iron [[armor]].
===Brewing and enchanting===
{{Main|Brewing|Enchanting}}
[[File:Enchantment Table animated experience.gif|right|thumb|An [[Enchanting Table|enchanting table]] with glyphs being absorbed into it.]]
[[Brewing]] creates [[potion]]s from various ingredients and [[water]] using a [[brewing stand]]. They are stored in a [[glass bottle]] and then consumed by the player or thrown at other mobs to generate a certain effect based on the magical ingredients used to create the potion. [[Enchanting]] is also used to upgrade [[armor]], tools or [[weapon]]s with an [[enchanting table]] or [[anvil]]. More powerful enchantments can be accessed by gaining [[experience]] and placing [[Bookshelf|bookshelves]] around the enchanting table.

===Mobs===

{{main|Mob}}
[[File:Creeper in forest.png|thumb|upright|right|A [[creeper]] in a [[forest]]. Creepers stalk the player and then explode once they get near.]]
[[Mob]]s (short for "mobiles") are interactable creatures that inhabit the world. [[Mob#Hostile mobs|Hostile mobs]] attack the player while [[Mob#Passive mobs|passive mobs]] do not. [[Mob#Neutral mobs|Neutral mobs]] attack when provoked (not all neutral mobs are provoked the same way).
The [[Overworld]] contains many passive animal mobs that may be killed for [[food]], [[Breeding|bred]] with one another, or kept around for useful utilities; these include:
*{{EntityLink|Pig|Pigs}}: drop [[raw porkchop]]s upon death and can be ridden using a [[saddle]] and holding a [[carrot on a stick]].
*{{EntityLink|Cow|Cows}}: a source of [[raw beef|beef]] and [[leather]], and can be [[milk bucket|milked]] using a [[bucket]].
*{{EntityLink|Sheep}}: kills leave [[raw mutton|mutton]] and [[wool]], but can be otherwise [[Shear|sheared]] for a more sustainable source of wool.
*{{EntityLink|Chicken|Chickens}}: drop [[raw chicken]] and feathers, and can lay [[egg]]s as an alternate form of reproduction.
*{{EntityLink|Horse|Horses}}: a form of fast land transport, equippable with [[saddle]]s and [[horse armor]].
*{{EntityLink|Rabbit|Rabbits}}: small, hasty mobs that drop [[Raw Rabbit|meat]], [[Rabbit Hide|hide]] and its [[Rabbit's Foot|foot]].
*{{EntityLink|Bat|Bats}}: ambient mobs that fly around caves.

Mobs that drop food drop the raw version of their food unless killed while on [[fire]] or by an item enchanted with the [[Fire Aspect|fire aspect]] enchantment.
Common hostile mobs found throughout the Overworld include:
*{{EntityLink|Zombie|Zombies}}: slow, basic melee attackers.
*{{EntityLink|Skeleton|Skeletons}}: ranged attackers using a [[bow]] and [[arrow]].
*{{EntityLink|Spider|Spiders}}: leap large distances and climb walls.
*{{EntityLink|Witch|Witches}}: make use of potions for attack and defense.
*{{EntityLink|Creeper|Creepers}}: sneak up and [[Explosion|explode]] when near the player.
*{{EntityLink|Enderman|Endermen}}: are tall, black creatures with purple eyes, boasting teleportation and strong melee attacks; they can be provoked if the [[player]] looks at their eyes.
The Overworld also contains some rarer mobs that spawn only on occasion or in specific [[biome]]s, places or times:
*{{EntityLink|Spider Jockey|Spider Jockeys}}: a [[skeleton]] riding a [[spider]].
*{{EntityLink|Chicken Jockey|Chicken Jockeys}}: a baby [[zombie]] riding a [[chicken]].

*{{EntityLink|Slime|Slimes}}: spawn deep within the map and in [[Swamp|swamplands]], splitting into multiple pieces when killed.
*{{EntityLink|Villager|Villagers}}: humanoid mobs with complex daily routines, inhabiting [[village]]s and are able to [[trade]] with the player.
*{{EntitySprite|iron-golem}} {{EntitySprite|snow-golem}} [[Golem]]s: artificial constructs that can attack hostiles.
*{{EntityLink|Cat|Cats}}: inhabit villages or [[swamp hut]]s, and can be tamed to deter [[creeper]]s and [[phantom]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Ocelot|Ocelots}}: spawn in [[jungle]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Parrot|Parrots}}: spawn in jungles and can imitate the sounds of nearby hostile [[mob]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Wolf|Wolves}}: can be tamed by the player and attack enemy mobs if the owner engages or is attacked by them.
*{{EntityLink|Llama|Llamas}}: can store items and form lines with other llamas, known as a caravan.
*{{EntityLink|Mooshroom|Mooshrooms}}: mushroom-covered [[cow]]s that spawn in [[mushroom fields]] [[biome]]s.
*{{EntitySprite|guardian}} {{EntitySprite|elder-guardian}} [[Guardian]]s and [[elder guardian]]s: spawn in [[ocean monument]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Donkey|Donkeys}}: similar to [[horse]]s, trading off their agility for the ability to store items via [[chest]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Skeleton Horse|Skeleton Horses}}: spawn rarely in [[thunderstorm]]s as part of a skeleton horse trap.
*{{EntityLink|Polar Bear|Polar Bears}}: inhabits ice biomes, and are very protective of their cubs.
*{{EntityLink|Panda|Pandas}}: spawn in [[jungle]]s and [[bamboo jungle]]s, and have different personalities.
*{{EntityLink|Silverfish}}: small [[arthropods]] that infest stone blocks.
*{{EntityLink|Endermite|Endermites}}: may spawn when a player throws an [[ender pearl]].
*{{EntityLink|Vindicator|Vindicators}}: spawn in [[woodland mansion]]s and [[raid]]s, wielding [[iron axe]]s that deal heavy melee damage.
*{{EntityLink|Pillager|Pillagers}}: spawn in [[pillager outpost]]s and raids, wielding [[crossbow]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Evoker|Evokers}}: spawn in woodland mansions and raids, able to summon biting fangs from the ground and [[vex]]es.
*{{EntityLink|Phantom|Phantoms}}: flying hostile creatures that spawn when the [[player]] has not slept for three days.
*{{EntityLink|Warden|Wardens}}: large, blind, and tough mobs that roam the [[deep dark]], using sound and smell to locate other mobs.
*{{EntityLink|Camel|Camels}}: rideable mobs that spawn in [[desert village]]s, able to dash and carry two players at once.
*{{EntityLink|Breeze|Breezes}}: hostile mobs that spawn in [[trial spawner]]s through [[trial chambers]] and shoots wind at the player.
Some mobs are found exclusively in [[the Nether]], including:
*{{EntityLink|Ghast|Ghasts}}: flying ghost-like creatures that shoot exploding [[fireball]]s at the player.
*{{EntityLink|Piglin|Piglins}}: obsessed with gold, they can [[Bartering|barter]] with the [[player]] to provide resource.
*{{EntityLink|Zombified Piglin|Zombified Piglins}}: undead piglins that wield [[golden sword]]s and attack in hordes if provoked.
*{{EntityLink|Hoglin|Hoglins}}: [[breed]]able hostile [[animal]]s.
*{{EntityLink|Wither Skeleton|Wither Skeletons}}: tall skeletons that wield stone swords and drop coal or, occasionally, [[wither skeleton skull]]s that can be used to summon an optional boss, the wither. Just like its cousin an attack from a wither skeleton will inflict the wither effect.
*{{EntityLink|Blaze|Blazes}}: spawned by [[Monster Spawner|spawners]] in [[nether fortress]], they shoot fireballs at players and hover above the ground.
*{{EntityLink|Magma Cube|Magma Cubes}}: a fiery counterpart to the Overworld's slimes, having fire resistance and increased damage.
*{{EntityLink|Strider|Striders}}: are the only passive mobs naturally spawning in the Nether, which can walk on lava and can be saddled and ridden with a [[warped fungus on a stick]].
[[The End]] contains the {{EntityLink|Ender Dragon}}, which is the main boss mob in ''Minecraft'' and allows the player to exit back to the Overworld when it dies, as well as {{EntityLink|Shulker|shulkers}}, block-like mobs that shoot homing bullets at the player which inflict the [[Levitation]] effect. They also drop their [[Shulker Shell|shells]], allowing the player to craft [[shulker box]]es.
The {{EntityLink|Wither}} is the second boss mob in ''Minecraft''. It is created by the player by placing wither skeleton skulls on top of [[soul sand]] or [[soul soil]] in a specific pattern. When spawned, they shoot wither skulls at nearby non-[[undead]] mobs, while also causing any mob hit by the skulls to get the [[Wither (effect)|Wither effect]].
===The Nether===
{{main|The Nether}}
[[File:The Nether.png|thumb|right|The Nether.]]
The Nether is a dimension in ''Minecraft'' accessible from the [[Overworld]] by a [[nether portal]]. It consists of five unique [[biome]]s, which are the [[nether wastes]], the [[basalt deltas]], the [[Crimson Forest|crimson]] and [[warped forest]]s and the [[soul sand valley]]s. Each biome has unique generation and terrain. It is populated by zombified piglins, blazes, ghasts, wither skeletons, magma cubes, piglins and hoglins. Ores in the Nether include [[nether quartz]], [[Nether Gold Ore|nether gold]] and [[ancient debris]]. The Nether also has large oceans of [[lava]] that have striders walking on them.
===The End===
{{main|The End}}
[[File:The End.png|thumb|right|The End.]]
The End is another dimension of the game where the player battles the [[ender dragon]]. The End is accessed by entering an [[end portal]] found in a [[stronghold]]. The End is composed of [[end stone]] and is inhabited by [[endermen]]. It also contains tall [[obsidian pillar]]s on top of which are [[end crystal]]s that heal the ender dragon. Once the ender dragon is slain, the [[exit portal]] is created in the center of the map and an [[end gateway portal]] is created near an edge of the map, which transports the player to the expansive [[outer End islands]] which are full of [[chorus fruit]] forests and [[End City|end cities]] filled of [[chest loot]] and [[shulker]]s. The end gateway portal is only accessed by throwing an [[ender pearl]], using [[elytra]] or [[trapdoor]]s to enter the portal. There are no ores in the End.
===Multiplayer (''Java'')===
{{Main|Server|Multiplayer}}
[[File:PlayerVersusPlayer.png|thumb|right|PvP (player vs player) on a multiplayer server.]]
''Minecraft'' multiplayer servers have developed to include their own rules and customs, guided by their administrators and moderators. The term [[Tutorials/Griefing|griefer]], meaning a player who causes grief, is a typical term on the internet but has taken up its definition on ''Minecraft'' servers: a person who destroys or defiles other users' creations on servers.
Griefers are the reason many server administrators make rules, but this has been taken a step further with modifications to the ''Minecraft'' server and even plugin-based replacement servers such as [[mcservers:Bukkit|Bukkit]]. Because of these plugin-based servers, new user-created features have shown up in ''Minecraft''. This includes features like money, vehicles, protection, RPG elements and more. These features normally do not require modification to a user's client and can be accessed by using chat commands. With the default controls, the chat screen is brought up by pressing {{key|T}}.<!-- Does this need to be included, its not official minecraft? -->
One popular game on multiplayer servers is [[Spleef]] (a play on the word "grief"), a game where the player aims to make another player drop through the floor by destroying blocks beneath the opponent's feet. This is typically played in a designated area and is usually run automatically using server plugins.
Many popular multiplayer servers exist that may contain, PvP arenas, custom [[minigames]] or large [[Survival]] or [[Creative]] worlds.
===Multiplayer (''Bedrock'')===
Multiplayer {{in|be}} differs from multiplayer on the ''Java Edition'' in that it is centered around a friend system. A player can add friends through the Friends tab in the menu or in the pause screen of a world. A player may invite friends to a world instead of having to pay for a server or realm. ''Minecraft'' has [[featured servers]] on ''Bedrock'', which means that they are available when opening the game. There are five featured servers: The Hive, CubeCraft, Lifeboat, Mineville and Galaxite.

{{main|Realms}}

'''''Minecraft'' Realms''' is an official subscription-based [[server]] hosting service that allows players to create and manage their own private ''Minecraft'' multiplayer worlds. Hosted by [[Mojang Studios]], Realms provides an easy and fast way to create servers and allows the owner to manage them from inside the game, without prior knowledge of the concepts for hosting on the internet. However, Realms are not intended for large public servers, but for groups of friends or as a family server.<ref>{{tweet|danfrisk|311725356434460672|Quick info: Minecraft Realms isn't built for huge public servers. ===Other===
There are a number of other versions of ''Minecraft''. {{el|4k}} is a simple version of ''Minecraft'' in the style of other "4K" Java games (everything is packaged in 4 kibibytes) by Notch for contests. [[Pi Edition|''Minecraft: Pi Edition'']] was a free ported version of {{el|pe}} [[Pocket Edition version history#0.5.0|0.5.0]] for the {{w|Raspberry Pi}},<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20121127035644/http://www.mojang.com/2012/11/minecraft-is-coming-to-the-raspberry-pi/ Minecraft is coming to Raspberry Pi!] - Mojang.com; November 24, 2012</ref> which was intended as an educational tool for novice programmers. It allowed users to manipulate the game code and supported multiple programming languages; however, it was discontinued in January 2016. [[China Edition|''Minecraft: China Edition'']] is a localized version of ''Minecraft'' for mainland China.

==Game customization==
===Add-ons===
{{main|Add-on}}
'''Add-ons'''{{only|be}} are the first step toward bringing customization to all editions of ''Minecraft'' and are officially supported by [[Mojang Studios]]/''Minecraft''. They currently allow players to transform the look of their worlds, change the behavior of mobs, and add entities, items and blocks, structures, functions and biomes. <!-- Mojang studios and minecraft are not interchangable -->
===Behavior packs ===
'''Behavior packs'''{{only|be}} change how vanilla mobs behave.
===Resource packs===
{{Main|Resource pack}}
The game officially supports changing most of its various textures, sounds, and texts through '''resource packs'''. Resource packs must contain a certain structure of files and folders placed in the <samp>[[.minecraft]]/resourcepacks</samp> folder. Installed resource packs, as well as the folder in which resource packs are placed, can be accessed in the options menu. The extent to which the resources are changed is dependent on how many files are contained in the resource pack.
===Data packs===
{{Main|Data pack}}
Data packs{{only|je}} provide a way for players to further customize vanilla worlds in a similar way to resource packs. Unlike resource packs, which modify the game's resources, data packs can be used to override or add new advancements, functions, loot tables, structures, recipes and tags without any code modification.
===Skins===
{{main|Skin}}
Skin refers to the texture that is placed onto a player model or mob.
The skin is divided into areas that act as the surface area of the character (for example, the front head area, left leg area, etc.). A skin allows only solid color; transparency is not allowed on the skin file except on the second layer, which is transparent by default; playing offline, pixels can be left free resulting in "holes" in the skin. The second layer can be used to give the character glasses, hats, or other accessories. Players can also change the arm size to be slim or normal. The slim variant is 3 pixels wide while the normal variant is 4 pixels wide.
====''Java Edition''====
{{in|je}}, there are no special features in the skins. This version has only the features listed in the first part of this section.
====''Bedrock Edition''====
{{IN|be}}, there are many more types of skin customization. [[Player]]s can add 3D custom hair, eyes, mouths, arms, legs and more. Players can also change the size of a character. Players can also get many different accessories for the skin. However, the player cannot do this with a custom skin, only with an in-game skin. Players can also buy accessories and skins. Having a skin that is smaller than normal or larger does not affect the hitbox size, but can still give an advantage in multiplayer servers because it can be harder to see them. Some of the skins also do not show their armor or hand-held [[item]]s.
===Capes===
{{main|Cape}}
Capes are an uncommon vanity item that can be equipped on a player's back. {{IN|be}}, players start with a cape that is not equipped by default and some skins come with capes.
Capes also flail around when the player runs. When the player equips elytra, the texture of the elytra changes to an equipped cape.
===Unofficial mods===
{{disclaimer|section=1}}
{{main|Mods}}
''Minecraft'' can be modified by replacing or adding Java class files to <samp>[[minecraft.jar]]</samp> {{in|je}}. This method of making custom modifications is not supported by Mojang as it can break the game if the mod is outdated, defective, or in conflict with another mod. Some such modifications impressed Notch or Jeb sufficiently that they were added to the game and the authors were credited under Additional Programming. Some examples of mods being implemented into the main game include Hippoplatimus' [[Piston]] Mod and horses from Dr. Zhark's Mo' Creatures mod were added in [[Beta 1.7]] and [[Java Edition 1.6.1|1.6.1]] respectively. <!-- SHOULD WE REMOVE THIS SECTION? IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OFFICIAL MINECRAFT! -->
===Third-party programs ===
{{disclaimer|section=1}}
{{main|Programs and editors}}
There are many programs designed for ''Minecraft''. These include 3D map editors and viewers, game modifiers, various informational programs (such as crafting recipes) and server wrappers, and other specialty programs. As with mods, these too are not supported by Mojang.
==Reception==
